Every sightseeing cruise from Tromsø heads into the fjords around the island, typically Kaldfjord or Grøtsund, and leaves from the city-centre harbour. Our verdict therefore rests on the points where the boats really differ, all of which you can check on the booking pages.
Your travel dates
The calendar decides first. In February and March all the compared boats sail. In early April, September and October, Brim Explorer had the only fjord-cruise dates at our check on 13 October 2026, and in December and January it was the luxury catamaran “Arctic Princess”, with departures on almost every day. For May to August we could not confirm any dates. Calendars can change, so check yours. When the boats run, month by month.
Time on the water and the boat
Brim Explorer’s trip takes 4 hours, Rødne’s 3.5 hours and the luxury catamaran 3 hours. Brim sails hybrid-electric catamarans that are close to silent on electric power, and an underwater drone shows the kelp forest when weather and current allow. Rødne runs a panorama sightseeing catamaran without add-ons. The boats compared side by side.
Food and warmth on board
None of these is a dining cruise. Rødne serves free coffee or tea and sells snacks at a kiosk. Brim includes small tasters from the sea, with drinks and a warm lunch to buy. The “Arctic Princess” serves fish soup on the way back and includes a thermal suit for every guest, which counts in the polar night. All the boats have a warm indoor lounge, but the best moments happen on deck. What to wear on deck.
Price
Rødne’s classic is the lowest-priced of the compared cruises, Brim costs more for the extra half-hour and the silent boat, and the luxury catamaran sits at the top of the range. The current price per person for each cruise is in the comparison table.
Wildlife and departure
Sea eagles and seals are the regulars of these fjords on every boat, likely but never guaranteed, so they do not tip the verdict. Rødne departs from Nerstrandkaia; for the other cruises your ticket names the quay on the city-centre harbour front. Wildlife on the fjords and departure points.
