Rødne's Arctic Fjord Cruise is the classic sightseeing option in Tromsø: a 3.5-hour catamaran trip out of the city harbour and into the fjord landscape around the island. Routes head into fjords such as Kaldfjord and Grøtsund, depending on weather and where the wildlife is. Sea eagles and seals turn up regularly; like everywhere in nature, sightings are possible, not promised.
On board it is deliberately simple: panorama seating inside, deck space outside, and a kiosk selling snacks and drinks rather than a served lunch. Reviewers consistently praise the boat and the crew; the most common criticism is value-for-money perception: the on-board experience is simpler than the price might suggest, which is worth knowing before you book rather than after.
Departure is from Nerstrandkaia in Tromsø. In winter the cruise sails in February and March; its booking calendar showed no dates from October 2026 to January 2027 and none in April 2027 when we checked on 13 October 2026. Expect real Arctic cold on deck in those winter months.

Brim Explorer runs this 4-hour fjord cruise on its hybrid-electric catamarans: on electric power the boat is close to silent, which changes the feel of the fjord completely. The guides tell the story of the coast and keep watch for seals and sea eagles, and when weather and current allow, the crew lowers an underwater drone into the kelp forest and streams the pictures on board. Small tasters of local delicacies from the sea are included; drinks and a warm lunch can be bought on board, and there is Wi-Fi. At our last check (September 2026) the cruise carried the largest review base of the compared cruises and was flagged as in high demand.
The whole trip happens on the water. Neither the booking page nor Brim Explorer's own description lists a stop ashore (checked 19 October 2026). Older reviews mention a landing at a fish-drying site, so do not book for that.

Brim’s second fjord window opens. Rødne’s booking calendar showed no October dates at our check (13 October 2026). Nights turn properly dark, which puts northern lights back on the menu for evening departures; reviewers have caught them mid-cruise in the dark months. It is a chance, not a promise.

Whatever the month, Arctic weather has the last word. Routes head into the fjords around Tromsø, typically Kaldfjord or Grøtsund, and the exact course is the crew’s call on the day; if there is ice in the fjord, Rødne’s captain chooses an alternative route. The boat was modern and very comfortable, with large windows to fully enjoy the views, plus plenty of space out on deck. We were lucky enough to spot eagles, a few red foxes, and even some seals during the journey!
If you're only doing one excursion then do this one. … The catamaran was spotless and viewing decks were available when you're ready to brave the cold. Worth every penny!!!

On dark-season evening departures it happens: one reviewer reported northern lights within two hours of the start of a Brim cruise. But aurora depends on solar activity and clear skies; no sightseeing cruise can promise it. If the lights are your priority, a dedicated aurora trip is the better tool.
