From anywhere in the compact city centre, the harbour front is a short, flat walk, since Tromsø’s downtown sits directly on the sound. In winter, budget a few extra minutes: pavements can be icy, and hurrying on ice is how holidays get shortened. If you are staying outside the centre, aim for the waterfront and then follow it; quay names are signposted on the buildings and piers.
